FAQ
Common Questions
What makes Windsong Safaris Unique?
We believe there are four main reasons traveling in Africa with Windsong Safaris is unique:
We’re not selling a product. We’re selling an experience. And as your guide on this adventure, we’re here to support you when necessary — but it’s our goal to stay on the sidelines. You are the hero of your great story. Not us.
Our itineraries are designed from our own experiences traveling through Africa. And they’re designed with you in mind, giving you endless opportunities for adventure, romance, and transformation.
Our dedication to giving back. We care deeply about Africa and its people and cultures. And for every person who travels with Windsong Safaris, we are able to help put many Kenyan children through school.
We treat our employees like family. And they, in turn, treat every client the same. That respect, that care, is what makes every Windsong safari a memorable experience.
How do I find out about visa requirements?
Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements for Kenya:
On 12 December 2023 the President of Kenya announced that Kenya would be visa-free from January 2024.
Visitors to Kenya are now required to apply online for an electronic travel authorisation in advance of travel.

Passport with at least two blank pages, six months' validity, and a Kenyan electronic travel authorization. You should have proof of yellow fever immunizations if arriving from an endemic country, or you may be denied entry.
Do I need travel insurance?
We do recommend that you take out comprehensive personal travel insurance for your trip.
What are the accommodations like?
Believe us — after an eventful safari, there’s nothing like the reprieve of a luxurious tented camp or lodge. That’s why we’ve chosen the best Africa has to offer. Sitting on your private veranda in old-world luxury with your journal or book offers the kind of relaxation you simply won’t find at home. The eco-friendly lodges we choose are romantic and offer impeccable service.
Are there any age restrictions?
Some of the lodges we choose do have age restrictions. But rest assured, if your travel party includes young children, we will find the right accommodations for everyone.
What medications or immunizations do I need?
Many travelers worry about malaria. And while contracting malaria is highly unlikely, if you are visiting the coast (Zanzibar, Lamu Island, or the Mombasa Coast), we especially recommend you take anti-malarials. A yellow fever inoculation is required if you are traveling between African countries — but not if you are only traveling to Kenya from the USA, Canada, or Europe. We suggest you contact your personal physician for professional advice on all vaccinations and immunizations, as well as other medications you personally might need to ensure optimal health while traveling.
Who greets me upon my arrival?
Once you clear customs at the airport, your Windsong Safaris Client Care Representative will be there to give you a warm welcome and transfer to your hotel.
What do you recommend for my first safari?
We recommend a luxury safari because you will have nothing to worry about. Simply relax and enjoy viewing abundant wildlife, otherworldly sights, luxurious tented camps and lodges — all in spectacular, romantic settings.
As far as which destinations and journeys are best for you, we recommend choosing the country/countries you’d like to visit and the amount of time you’d like to spend in Africa. Start by exploring our Tours & Destinations page to get some ideas!
Of course we know everyone has a budget so we can work with you to find the perfect safari options!
How do I know which trip is right for me?
That’s a tough one to answer, simply because it’s such a subjective question. What interests you? What type of activities are you most looking forward to? The best way to truly answer this question is to first read through our Tours & Destinations If something stands out to you, great! If you still have questions, we’re here to help. We strongly encourage you to get in touch and ask our experienced travel consultants. If there’s something missing from our Journeys that you want to experience, we’re happy to work with you to design a custom adventure just for you!
What is the food like?
The food is fresh, delicious, plentiful, varied, and healthy. Even picky eaters find plenty of options. Breakfasts typically include omelets/eggs, pancakes, fresh fruits, cereals, and more. Lunches are varied and can include pasta, fresh fish, rice, vegetables, cheese, and more. Dinners are off the menu and sometimes include buffets.
Is it safe to go on safari?
Safety is a top priority for us, and we will never recommend a destination or activity we consider unsafe for tourists.
Many visitors are concerned about crime, but we have never had any problems or incidents of crime on our safaris. Crime occurs in every major city in the world, and the key is to use common sense and avoid risky situations or known problem areas.
Going on safari is also quite safe. As long as you abide by the rules and stay in your vehicle or with your safari guide, there is no need to be concerned about wild animals. Some lodges and camps are not fenced and you will be briefed about that at each camp. At private lodges that are not fenced, you will always be in the company of a trained ranger or safari guide.
Your accommodation is usually designed to be as insect-proof as possible.
Will I have access to the internet and phone service while on safari?
Most establishments have wifi — or at least internet service. That said, service can be sporadic, as most locations are very remote. It can be very liberating to be free of the devices that overrun our daily lives back home.
What if I have a special request for something I want to experience in Africa?
We offer tailor-made safaris that cater to your every whim. We’ve trekked to remote villages, taken long bush walks with Maasai warriors, run with Kenyans on the highlands, hot air balloon rides over the Maasai Mara, and more.
What are the best parts about going on an adventure of this kind?
Leaving our busy lives behind to recharge and gain a fresh perspective on life. Spending such uninterrupted quality time with family and friends, meeting personal challenges, and coming back having gone through such a transformational experience is life-changing. As Mark Twain said, “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore, dream, discover.”
Do I have to make my own international flight arrangements?
Yes, you’ll have to book your own international flights to and from Africa. Most flights from the US are routed through Europe. A popular alternative is to fly through Dubai.
The most important thing when booking is to ensure that your international itinerary lines up with the Windsong safari itinerary. Extra charges apply for arrivals and departures that don’t align with your itinerary’s schedule.
What kind of animals will I see?
On your safari, you’ll have a very good chance of seeing the Big Five: lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo, and rhinos. Nothing in life is guaranteed, however, so keep that in mind. That said, Africa is rich with wildlife, so spotting unique creatures in their natural habitat is all but assured. You’ll see wildebeests, zebras, antelopes, gazelles, giraffes, baboons, warthogs, an abundance of birds, and so much more.
What is the Great Migration — and when does it take place?
The Great Migration is the awe-inspiring movement of over 1.5 million wildebeests — as well as zebras, gazelles, and predators — from the Serengeti in Tanzania through croc-infested waters to the Maasai Mara in Kenya. It’s a yearly cycle as the wildlife migrate in search of greener grass. There’s no telling exactly when it will take place, as factors like rain and drought are unpredictable. With that in mind, we are constantly in touch with our guides on the ground and, if the migration is a top priority of yours, we will recommend the best possible time of year and itinerary to place you in an ideal position with the greatest potential to see the migration. As a general rule of thumb, the migratory animals are in Maasai Mara (Kenya) August through October. For the rest of year they migrate in a tremendous clockwise circle of sorts through the Serengeti (Tanzania). Of course the migration never starts or ends – it is a continuous migratory pattern of life in the Serengeti Ecosystem. Whether or not you witness the migration itself, the animals of the Serengeti Plains are plentiful year-round, so you’ll be sure to spot them on your safari.
